“Welcome” as translated into 17 languages identified by a community group when asked, “what language did you grow up speaking?” The Banff Canmore Community Foundation convened the group on February 23, 2016, to discuss Canada 150 with the themes: Inclusion, Belonging, Connection, Reconciliation. And now here we are – 2017 and Canada’s 150th birthday. The foundation has been making our community a smarter, more caring, and more welcoming place in time for 2017 (and beyond!). Some of our gifts to community include: co-founding a community recognition program called SHINE in 2012, hosting a young adult leadership workshop called Elevate 150 in 2015, and granting $39,000 to five sesquicentennial projects in 2016, to name a few initiatives.

The foundation has a couple of more gifts to community on the go too! Along with our community partners, we’re currently working on building our SPACE Lab (where SPACE is an acronym for: Share Philanthropy: Act with Care and Empathy and Lab is short for Laboratory = a place for research and learning). The SPACE Lab is a renovation project at 214 Banff Avenue that will transform an existing underused space into a barrier free, inclusive, accessible meeting, learning and working space for young adults, centrally located in the heart of Banff. We’re also planning a public art installation to celebrate all of the bright faces of SHINE. Teamwork makes the dream work – so will you join us in imagining? Here’s to 2017!
